To be quite honest, I used to think staycations were lame. Who wants to just stay around town and see the same old things? Actually, staycations deserve a lot of credit, as they can provide the same great experiences as a luxurious trip. Most newlyweds don't have a huge abundance of money, thus expensive honeymoons may not be in the cards. Don't sweat it though. You can still have a fantastic time on your honeymoon close to home. Besides, by saving money now, you can start or add to a travel fund and take a far away excursion in the future.
Go outside
Nature provides the perfect setting for a number of sweet, inexpensive honeymoon ideas. For example, lovers of outdoor eating might enjoy a picnic. Plan the picnic for your new bride or groom complete with your favorite foods and drinks. Think about a themed picnic (i,e. Mediterranean, Sea Life, Sweet & Salty) to add a bit of culture or travel to your picnic. While picnics aren't necessarily considered a 'trip', try going on a different themed picnic each day for the duration of your honeymoon. Also, head to a different location with each picnic to increase the feel of traveling to different places.
Star gazing is a fabulous way to get close amongst the beauty of nature. As an avid lover of star gazing, the idea of getting cozy with my sweetie under the twinkling sky sends me to my happy place. Go for this star gazing after an exhilarating hike and romantic meal overlooking your town or city. This might be just what you and your new bride or groom need to destress and enjoy the company of each other. Take the next few days to enjoy the beauty of your area by going old-fashioned and pitching a tent. Camping is not only a great way to bond with your spouse, but it is also a superb way to disconnect from the world and reconnect with yourself.
Take the tourist route
This one might seem a little silly, but try being a tourist in your surrounding area. Many cities have fun touristy type of activities such as mural tours, museums, nature walks, ghost tours, and special restaurants. Book yourselves a hotel room (if you can afford a slightly more upscale one, go ahead and splurge as it is your honeymoon) and start exploring! You might choose to do some research beforehand to find out where exactly the tourists find themselves flocking, or you might decide to just wing it and see what you come across as you go. Chances are, you will discover at least one new thing about the area. Tip: Don't forget your camera! As tourists want nothing more than to remember each stop by photo, get your camera out and start snapping. The photos you take on your honeymoon excursion make for fun wall decor and will remain a special portrayal of your newlywed status even if they are from around your town.
Stay at home
If you want to take the staycation even more literally, you can actually stay right in your house. This can be the perfect way to remind yourself about the comforts of your own home. If you do decide to spend your honeymoon at home, be aware that it might be tempting to do work things or keep up with your normal routine. Try and steer clear of this however, and make sure to use this time to enjoy your new husband or wife. Let the stresses of your daily life go as you would if you were on your honeymoon far away. Staycations at home can be difficult to pull off because folks often end up just going back to day-to-day life. If you don't think you and your honey can pull of a relaxing time at home, try using one of the other staycation ideas.
With these ideas in mind, a budget friendly honeymoon is at your fingertips. Have fun planning your special time with your sweetheart, and remember that there is always a journey to be had, whether it be near or far!
